A strong and sensitive re-interpretation of the complete Major and Minor arcana by visual artist Rachel Howe.
Each of the 78 cards in the Small Spells Tarot Deck is unique, with symbolism and imagery extracted from the artist's drawing practice and tattoo work. From pyramids to thorny roses, spiderwebs to basketballs, Howe's illustrations embrace mysticism while staying firmly rooted in the culture of modern design. Each card is rendered in full color, on high quality playing-card satin paper stock in the traditional oversized scale (larger than regular playing cards.)
The deck is accompanied by a Guidebook which begins with an essay by the artist on giving readings and the basic meanings of the suits, numbers, and court cards. She provides an example of her preferred spread (she likes a modified Celtic Cross), and ends with notes on building intuition, communication and healing. Following the essay are 78 pages with reproductions of each card in black and white on black paper (one card per page), along with easy-to-understand descriptions of each card written by Howe with loving care.

"After using the Rider-Waite deck for years, I felt that an updated take on the classic imagery would be welcome, as tarot continues to grow in popularity. At the same time, my drawing practice began to take on more symbolic meaning, and my interest in using visual imagery to communicate feelings and energy was growing. It all came together in the creation of the tarot deck. The images for each card were carefully channeled and drawn, in tune with the meanings of each card. " - Rachel Howe
